FAQs - Errors

I’m trying to run DavkaWriter 7 on my Mac but it crashes when I start it. What do I do?

If DavkaWriter on your Mac crashes with the following error:

“The program davwrite.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”

The most likely cause is that DavkaWriter needs a printer to be installed on your system. If you don’t have a printer installed on your Mac, DavkaWriter won’t run. To solve this, you can install a free virtual printer called CUPS-PDF from here:

http://www.macupdate.com/download/20219/CUPS-PDF%202.5.0%20Installer.zip

Once this has been installed, go into System Preferences -> Print & Scan and add this as your default printer. Run DavkaWriter and it should work fine.

Why do I get an “invalid path” error when I try to open a file with Hebrew letters in the filename in DavkaWriter?

In Windows XP, Vista, and 7, DavkaWriter can use Hebrew filenames only if Windows’ Hebrew language support is fully installed and the “default locale for non-Unicode programs” is set to Hebrew.

Here are links for instructions to set up Windows’ Hebrew language support:
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7

Make sure to follow the last step to change the system locale, or Hebrew filenames will not work.

Why don’t my DavkaWriter files open when I double-click them in Windows?

This problem occurs when the “file association” between the DavkaWriter program and the DWD file type is not set up properly. Windows may prompt you to choose the program you want to use to open this type of file or it may try to open the file in a different program you may have chosen previously.

To fix this issue:

  • Right-click a DavkaWriter document (a file with a .DWD extension)
  • Choose Open With…
  • Click Browse
  • Navigate to C:\Program Files\Davka Corp\DavkaWriter (may be Program Files (x86) on 64-bit Windows)
  • Choose the “davwrite.exe” program
  • MAKE SURE to choose the checkbox to “always use this program to open this type of file”
  • Click OK

DavkaWriter will then be set properly to open DWD files directly from Windows.

Why am I getting strange characters like øàèåïíùãâ when I try to type Hebrew in DavkaWriter?

DavkaWriter and Windows’ Hebrew language support try to use the same reserved keystroke – Alt+Shift. If you are using DavkaWriter on a system that has Windows’ Hebrew language support installed (the EN/HE language selector) and you use Alt-Shift to switch languages, Windows will switch to Hebrew mode, which is not compatible with DavkaWriter.

In order to type Hebrew in DavkaWriter, Windows must be left in English mode (the EN option). You can then switch languages in DavkaWriter using Alt+/ or Alt-. instead of Alt+Shift.

What do I do if exporting to PDF doesn't work?

This is a known issue in DavkaWriter 7 for Windows that occurs for some users. Please follow these steps to solve the problem:

First, try updating DavkaWriter to version 7.0.50. If that fails:

  1. Right-click on Start menu icon and choose "Programs and Features".
  2. Find any program listed as "DavkaWriter Utility" and uninstall it.
  3. Similarly, uninstall any program called "NovaPdf" or whose publisher is "Softland" You may have to click the F5 key to refresh the list.
  4. Repeat until there are no such items listed.
  5. Right-click on Start menu icon and choose "Control Panel". Open the "Devices & Printers" control panel. For each item listed under "Printers", select it and view the information panel that appears at the bottom of the control panel. If the words "Novapdf" appear anywhere there, uninstall this "printer" by right-clicking and choosing "Remove device."
  6. Right-click on Start menu and choose "Device Manager". Expand the "Print Queues" item and for anything listed as "DavkaWriter Utility" or which contains the word "NovaPdf", right-click and choose uninstall.
  7. Restart the computer.
  8. Download the following link: https://1drv.ms/f/s!Apf72OxBUnGdliGoxZKGlnsWFNW1
  9. Save the folder (both files) onto your hard drive.
  10. Right-click the file "Install DavkaWriter Utility.bat" and choose "Run as administrator."
  11. Run the installer.
  12. Restart the computer.
  13. See if the Devices & Printers control panel now lists the DavkaWriter Utility.
  14. If it does, see if DavkaWriter Export to PDF works. (Do NOT print directly to it. You will always get the watermarks.)
